Architecture Design of The Quarry House

Description About The Project

The Quarry House designed by Crest Architects, nestled amidst rolling farmlands, far from the urban bustle of Bangalore, stands as a testament to innovative architectural design and harmonious integration with its natural surroundings. This unique residence, featuring an 18-foot cantilever structure, is designed for a family of five and is meticulously Vaastu-compliant, ensuring a profound connection to nature.

Despite a generous plot area of 6,650 square feet, the design adheres to the ‘Aaya’ footprint, limiting the ground floor to just 2,500 square feet. This constraint inspired an open-plan residence that exudes a sense of vastness while maintaining an unbroken connection to the outdoors. The upper floor’s multiple overhangs accommodate various spaces, creating a captivating arrangement of masses that frame picturesque views of the surrounding landscape.

The open space around the building is crafted with steps and stone pathways that seamlessly merge with the tropical landscape. A waterbody in the northeastern corner enhances the peaceful ambiance, contributing to the overall serenity of the setting.

Strategically positioned skylights throughout the interior promote natural light and engage residents with the changing seasons, cultivating a sense of tranquility. The design’s aesthetic is characterized by the raw integration of various stone types and exposed concrete, earning it the title “Quarry House.”

On the ground floor, formal and semi-formal living areas, along with a TV room, harmonize the house with its surroundings. A unique feature of Quarry House is its puja room, which floats above a tranquil water body. Enclosed by a concrete wall and illuminated by natural light from above, this space offers a serene sanctuary for spiritual contemplation. A sliding partition wall connects the puja room with the formal living area, allowing for versatile usage and maintaining a harmonious flow between different zones.

At the heart of Quarry House is a striking architectural feature: the centrally located metal staircase. This staircase, cantilevered from a suspended concrete wall, serves as a functional connector between different levels and a sculptural centerpiece that enhances the spatial dynamics and visual appeal of the residence. It maximizes floor space and facilitates an open-plan layout, exemplifying the architects’ commitment to innovative design solutions. The staircase partitions the living and dining areas while maintaining a sense of openness and fluidity.

The first floor offers three private bedrooms, each meticulously designed with individual character. Every bedroom opens to a private balcony, providing panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. This design choice enhances privacy and encourages a deep connection with nature, offering intimate spaces for relaxation and contemplation.

The master bedroom is simple and elegant, focusing on material quality and functionality. A glazed partition allows for a visual connection between the room and the dining area, bringing in ample light when the curtains are open. The 18-foot cantilevered guest room, featuring exposed concrete, exhibits a minimalist and rugged aesthetic, acting as a canopy for car parking below. The son’s bedroom hangs over the deck above the TV room, capturing views of the waterbody and landscape below.

The design encourages curiosity and engagement, ensuring that every moment spent in The Quarry House is dynamic and enriching. Through its connection with nature, the house offers diverse experiences throughout the year, making each day unique and comfortable.
