Architecture Design of R+J House

Description About The Project

R+J House located at the secluded corner of a gated community in Jakarta, this residence stands out with its distinctive architectural design. Surrounded by lush greenery, the house provides a serene and natural ambiance, offering a calm retreat within the bustling housing complex. Designed for a young family with a passion for contemporary art, the project seamlessly integrates unique art objects into its spaces, creating a museum-like experience throughout.

Facing the challenge of limited space, the design adopts a raumplan, allowing for fluid movement between interconnected spaces. The carefully orchestrated sequence of rooms forms a harmonious loop, providing both intimacy and freedom within the unified volume of the house. An interlocking void extends vertically, balancing the horizontal placement of art objects and enhancing the overall spatial experience.

Drawing inspiration from traditional atrium spaces, the house features a central atrium that serves as the heart of the residence. This expansive area emphasizes a sense of space and light, offering occupants a private yet monumental experience with unobstructed views throughout.

The entrance procession unfolds as a series of experiences, with a narrow staircase leading to a side-facing main door. The door, somewhat camouflaged and subdued, opens up to reveal the grandeur of the central atrium. Extending vertically to the skylight and horizontally to a column-free opening leading to the swimming pool, the design blurs the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces. The result is a residence that seamlessly integrates with its surroundings, inviting the outdoor environment to become an integral part of the indoor living space.

Each plane and level of the house becomes a continuous space where art objects are thoughtfully displayed, encouraging discovery as one moves within the interconnected areas.

This notion of peoples’ movements within the spaces is also taken quite literally, translated into the staircase design, which is placed at the very center of the atrium space, which serves as the central open core of the house.

The staircase design, positioned at the center of the atrium, serves as the central open core of the house. It facilitates a 360-degree view, allowing the eyes and body to move seamlessly through the spaces, enhancing the sensory experience of art, architecture, and nature.

The R+J House Gallery:

Text by the Architects: Situated on the far end corner of the gated community housing area in Jakarta, the site was unique compared to the other sites within the same area. It was surrounded by a green open area, giving the site a very natural view outside, with a lot of trees and a relatively calm corner of the housing complex. The brief of the project is to make space for a young family, with a lot of possibilities to place specific kinds of objects around the house because of the owners’ interest in distinctive contemporary art objects. The initial idea is to take this notable interest seriously to be incorporated into the overall spaces and architecture.
